The US Navy is racing to save an F-35C fighter jet that crashed into an aircraft carrier and plunged into the sea from the bottom of the South China Sea, bringing with it top-secret technology that would have been a blow if China takes it first.
The Navy said the F-35C crashed on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson during routine operations on Monday, injuring the pilot, who was ejected from the plane before it plunged into the sea with six sailors on board.
The advanced US warplane, a stealth drone worth over $100 million, is packed with highly classified technology and, if found, would be an intelligence boon for China, which considers almost the entirety of the South China Sea its territory. Vinson was on patrol to challenge this territorial claim and defend international freedom of navigation.

The F-35C is a version of the aircraft specifically designed to operate from aircraft carriers. Maritime experts said it could take more than 10 days for a US rescue ship to reach the crash site, potentially giving Chinese submarines the opportunity to find it first.

In 2001, a badly damaged American EP-3 surveillance plane made a violent emergency landing on the Chinese island of Hainan after colliding with a Chinese fighter jet that was following it. The fighter plane crashed and its pilot died.

The pilot ejected and the plane was recovered from the sea floor a few weeks later.
In April 2019, a Japanese F-35A, a traditional take-off and landing version, crashed into the Pacific at over 1,000 km/h, killing the pilot and leaving only debris behind.
